Abstract

Leonardo Australia is the regional subsidiary of Leonardo, a global high-tech company and a key player in Aerospace, Defence and Security. Headquartered in Italy, Leonardo has over 49,000 employees. With its offices and industrial plants, the Company is present in over 200 sites worldwide, with a significant industrial presence in four domestic markets (Italy, the UK, the U.S. and Poland) as well as strategic partnerships in the most important high potential international markets.

Leonardo Australia launched its physical presence into the local Defence market in Australia in 2013. This followed its appointment as Prime Systems Integrator for the multi-million-dollar SEA1442 Phase 4 project. Since 2013 Leonardo Australia has continued to grow through acquisitions, utilisation of the Australian skills base and leveraging leading edge technology and capability of Leonardo worldwide. Leonardo has an extensive global network and through its various sectors, divisions and subsidiaries continue to actively identify technologies and solutions to deliver advanced capability to the Australian Navy, Defence Forces, Emergency Services and wider Australian industry.

Today Leonardo Australia employs over 100 people in 4 sites: Port Melbourne, Essendon Airport, Nowra and Rockingham, WA. It is currently establishing a Helicopter Main Rotor Transmission Repair and Overhaul facility at Melbourne’s Fishermans Bend as a joint investment with the Commonwealth. In 2021 that site will become Leonardo’s new National Headquarters.

The briefing session will cover Leonardo Australia’s key programmes and capabilities, with a focus on maritime domain, UAS, cyber security and space comms.

Biography

Michael is the Chairman of the Board of Leonardo Australia Pty Ltd. He brings extensive professional experience spanning 35 years, first in Law and then within the Defence Industry and has worked in Leonardo in many of the Divisions and at Corporate level. During his tenure Leonardo Australia launched delivery of the SEA1442 Ph4 Next Gen Naval Communication Solution to RAN, won the Commonwealth Games Security Contract and the Naval Guns for SEA1180 and has achieved significant organic growth for the last 5 consecutive years to become the 5th largest Australian SME in the Defence Sector and one of Australia’s top 40 Defence companies. Michael previously worked for Leonardo in Rome and London and held senior management roles in the Aviation industry in Spain and Japan. He is also Regional Director, Oceania, for Leonardo Corporate, ensuring excellent reach back into the larger company. He is a non-executive Director of a number of companies and on the Board of the Italian Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Melbourne. Michael is a pilot, a gifted musician and speaks four languages and is married to Daniela with daughter Emma.

Biography

Wayne has extensive and well-rounded Maritime Domain experience. This experience has its genus in his 17 years’ service as a Maritime Warfare Officer in the Royal Australian Navy. Following this tenure of service, Wayne broadened his experience base through numerous resource industry mega projects with global operations and supply chains. Today Wayne is part of the Leonardo Australia team based on the East Coast and with a primary focused upon Leonardo’s interests in the Maritime domain.

Jeff Salvestro-Martin is an ex Naval Officer who joined the company in 1995. He performed various precursor roles fundamental to the establishment of Leonardo Australia. Italian design features heavily in his professional and extra-curricular interests.

Biography

Richard represents Leonardo and its partners to the UK Government through key partnerships he maintains with trade bodies such as techUK and ADS. He leads major defence and security campaigns - both in the UK and for export across the world - working closely with international subsidiaries, partner companies, UK Department of International Trade Defence and Security Exports and in-country UK Government representatives. Richard is a staunch advocate and mobiliser of international collaboration. He is keen to see industry do its part in influencing, shaping and supporting Government strategy, and help develop markets in the UK and around the world. As Head of Sales and Business Development for Leonardo’s Cyber Security Division in the UK, Richard promotes and reinforces the importance of adhering to NCSC standards to ensure national resilience through the development of a healthy cyber security market that serves our national interest and that of our allies.
