Abstract

The proliferation of data and Big Data is revolutionising the possibilities for analysis- driven operational strategies and decision support. Data is a major organisational asset and path to operational advantage. But data literacy is not evolving at the same pace as data technology.
Being literate and effective with data should not be jargon-rich technobabble for a few but a key skill that opens opportunities of innovation for all.
This update will present practical everyday examples of modern data and information techniques, tools and metrics to provide a basis for data literacy.
We will cover:
Data Definitions – Data hierarchies, data management architecture and strategy, data outcome planning. Techniques to identify data priorities. The result is a deliberate and organised approach to data assets to bring faster operational and support outcomes to Defence.
Data Operations – Asset and technical management are dependent on how quickly data is discoverable, maintainable, and trusted for quality. We use simple language analysis to simplify the data complexity into key perspectives. This will give the means to identify and remove duplicated data and align understanding of different operational processes. The techniques of data issue management, data trust management and search management lower exposure to data quality risks.
Data Protections – We explore practical ways to handle data legally, ethically and securely to empower Defence staff at all levels in data management. Protecting and securing data should not stifle user access to data but still provide appropriate confidentiality and integrity of data.
