Biography

Dr. Yoko Furukawa is a Science Director at the US Office of Naval Research Global (ONRG). In this role, she leads US Naval Research Enterprise’s science and technology engagements and partnership building with key international research communities. Prior to joining ONRG in 2014, she was a research scientist at the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). Dr. Furukawa has served as a member of the technical committee for US DOD’s SERDP Environmental Restoration (SERDP-ER) Program Area. She has also served as Co-Editor in Chief for the American Chemical Society Division of Geochemistry’s official journal, Geochemical Transactions. Dr. Furukawa’s honors include the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award (2016), National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP) Excellence in Partnering Award (2017), and NRL’s Alan Berman Research Publication Award (2001, 2008 and 2010). Dr. Furukawa holds a Ph.D. degree in Geosciences from the Pennsylvania State University which she earned in 1994. Additionally, she has a B.S. degree in Mineral Resources Engineering from Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan.
