ABSTRACT
The second space age is truly upon us. One of the big drivers of this is the insatiable demand for connectivity. 5G and terrestrial communications are an important part of addressing these needs, but there some things they just cannot do.
There are things that need satellites - of all sizes, across all spectrums. Just as you wouldn't ferry a jumbo full of passengers across the pacific in a Cessna, nor would you hire a bus to take two friends out to dinner. The user requirements and experience must dictate the most efficient form of delivery.
Australia needs the power of a strong, thriving space sector. As the second space age develops, the choices we make – both as an industry and in the Defence sector – will set our position for decades to come. Satellite communications, by its very nature, is an industry that relies on a global community for success - a partnership between government and industry.
Not putting a nation's satcom eggs in a single basket will ensure long-term growth and diversity in the sector for lasting industrial strength.
This paper will show how, as we embark on this second space age, we can act together, act globally, act decisively, act with innovation, drive and commitment, act wisely and sustainably. Australia has a proud reputation in the world of being early technology adopters and the ADF can work closely with industry to set the overall course and work with industry to establish priorities.
BIOGRAPHY
Todd McDonell joined Inmarsat in May 2013 as the Vice President of Global Government Solutions and became President of Inmarsat’s Global Government business in July 2019. An early stint running operational support for the Australian Navy’s submarine communications systems provided education in military communications systems and satellite communications systems. Following his naval career Todd & some other former Australian defence personnel created a company called TC Communications focused on the design, delivery and support of satellite communications systems. Todd became CEO of the TC business in 2000 and grew the business into one of the preeminent Inmarsat partners. Inmarsat acquired the TC business in May 2013 and integrated it into the Inmarsat Global Government business unit.
