ABSTRACT
Operating within the context of rapidly changing geo-political conditions and extreme events, Defence requires technologies that facilitate the rapid delivery of modern capabilities.
One such technology is Kubernetes, an open-source container management system designed to make deploying and managing complex distributed systems easier. It provides developers the application programming interfaces (APIs) to scale and deploy applications in containers. Kubernetes was the first “cloud-native” technology, and is driven by an incredibly active open source community.
This tutorial will provide an interactive introduction to Kubernetes for Defence, allowing the audience to interact with containerised applications deployed to a Kubernetes platform. The tutorial will also explore innovative Kubernetes concepts relevant for Defence environments. For example, Kubernetes Operators, or “applications on auto-pilot”, and how operators can be used to scale Defence applications out to deployed sites.
Importantly, we’ll answer some fundamental questions about Kubernetes for a Defence audience - why are containers increasingly being used to deploy applications, and what drives innovation in the containers landscape? What are the benefits of Kubernetes and containers for application developers, system engineers, and solution architects working across Defence projects?
Finally, we’ll provide some guidance to the audience on how to get started with Kubernetes, and easier “on ramps” to being productive with Kubernetes and containers.
BIOGRAPHY
Shane Boulden is a Red Hat Solution Architect supporting Defence capabilities and major programs. Formally a Royal Australian Navy officer, he now supports Defence programs to adopt open source technologies.
Recently he's worked with the Compliance as Code open source project to codify Australian compliance baselines, and make this available to Australian organisations to better secure hybrid cloud workloads.
