ABSTRACT
The Defence Transformation Strategy 2020, desires a more data–informed defence organisation. We might express this as providing the right data to the right people at the right time. To deliver this data management vision we will discuss an innovative approach using the Data Mesh concept.
An ongoing challenge in large organisations is the balance of centralised control and local autonomy. Defence particularly feels this challenge as interoperability is a critical requirement, however, capabilities may be isolated and need to operate autonomously.
Recognising this challenge, Defence has chosen a hub and spoke approach to data governance responding to the challenge of decentralised autonomous data management within a centralised strategic data management framework.
Complementing the data governance direction, Defence may start considering an appropriate data architecture. Over the last decade, software development has achieved a successful transition from monolithic to microservices architectures. When applied to data architecture, this concept is called Data Mesh. It is being applied to design independent, encapsulated data components. Data Mesh decentralises the ownership of data functions in the form of domains and allow interoperable sharing of data between domains securely as “data products”.
Two Australian specialist data management firms, Robinson Ryan and Intellify, will share their experience in implementing Data Mesh, provide an end-to-end ADF scenario and the required design patterns. Data Mesh is a blueprint for secure and reliable data integration.
This presentation has relevance to professionals involved in data governance, data science, machine learning, information risk and compliance and business transformation.
