ABSTRACT
The Department of Defence currently operates many disconnected environments, spanning core data centres, cloud environments, and deployed services. To support consistent and accelerated capability across private, public clouds and at the edge, an Open Hybrid Cloud operating model becomes essential. This allows Defence to provide assurances to capability providers, lines of business and strategic partners that wherever they are developing, operating or deploying services, a consistent platform will be available to drive innovation and increase Defence capability.
An Open Hybrid cloud operating model for Defence also allows for innovative ways of working, supporting Defence’s unique constraints and capabilities: - Code low/deploy high workflows to be used to support better collaboration with Australian Industry Capability and indigenous enterprises; - Consistent security policies applied across on-premises and cloud platforms; and - Over-the-air application updates in air-gapped environments.
Importantly, an open hybrid cloud operating model supports AI/ML readiness. Defence data is frequently siloed, providing protections against data disclosure and ensuring data integrity. Removing these data safeguards isn’t appropriate - a better solution is to push cloud services out to the data and mission environments, where the data resides.
Kubernetes was the first “cloud-native” technology, and continues to define cloud operating concepts. This presentation will further discuss why Kubernetes is essential for Defence to rapidly realise the value of open hybrid cloud operating models, and the data and development models this supports.
BIOGRAPHY
Shane Boulden is a Red Hat Solution Architect supporting Defence capabilities and major programs. Formally a Royal Australian Navy officer, he now supports Defence programs to adopt open source technologies.
Recently he's worked with the Compliance as Code open source project to codify Australian compliance baselines, and make this available to Australian organisations to better secure hybrid cloud workloads.
