ABSTRACT
Satellite networks provide a crucial communications path for teams operating in some of the harshest environments in the world. The nature of satellite communications introduces some unique challenges for operators focused on Quality of Experience. Not all communications stacks are created equal and understanding how the different moving parts of a system work together is vital to ensuring that communications are efficient, fair, and (or) prioritised. In this tutorial Leigh will take you through the variables that impact performance and efficiency of communications, and how to avoid common pitfalls such as buffer bloat, whilst managing congestion control, rate pacing, and Space Communications Protocol Standards (SCPS). We will also discuss the advantages of observability in monitoring for these and other application performance challenges within satellite and wireless communications such as LTE, and Low Earth Orbit networks. At the end of this tutorial you will be able to answer the following questions: * How do we tell the difference between an application problem and the transport network problem? * How do I configure router buffers? * Will WAN optimisation help my application? * What are the optimal TCP settings for this environment? * What metrics matter when analysing problems?
