ABSTRACT
New Space is a label for recent changes in space technology driven by dramatic reductions in launch cost and improvements in the ruggedness and reliability of electronic systems. New Space generally targets Low Earth Orbit where access is easiest and the hazards posed by radiation are lowest. In this presentation we discuss the direct implications of these changes and how they disrupt the ideas that have prevailed in the space industry since its inception. Of particular note is the impact of the much greater affordability of individual satellites on the viability of constellations, and in turn the ways that constellations provide performance in ways that enhance scalability. We conclude with an analysis of several constellation missions to highlight the ways in which New Space does, and does not bring forward dramatic progress in space delivered services.

BIOGRAPHY
For more than 20 years, Dr Doug Griffin has been managing multi-disciplinary teams to develop and operate space missions and spacecraft systems in Europe and Australia. His experience covers the entire scope of the development lifecycle; from initial customer engagement and system architecting, to feasibility assessment and development planning and then implementation and flight operations. He has strong skills in a broad range of technical and non-technical disciplines which enables him to successfully manage competing requirements in space mission design and development. He uses his strong leadership and people management skills to effectively manage teams of Engineers and Physicists. He is one of the Founders of Skykraft where he is currently Chief Engineer.
