ABSTRACT
Cybersecurity is always in the spotlight for critical data leaks – but other back doors left ajar to malicious attackers are being overlooked. When sensitive information needs to be shared, a quiet phone call (or ‘secure’ message) is often placed with the assumption the audience is known. Think again. USA counterintelligence uncovered plans in July for foreign communications equipment placed in Washington for surveillance. FBI and MI5 are also collaborating to thwart spikes in foreign espionage. ASIO states spying (espionage) will supplant terrorism as Australia’s main security threat over the next five years. In war or peace, the enemy never sleeps. Messaging services are being intercepted at rates never seen before. The ‘work anywhere’ movement adds to the threat. Government employees are messaging and calling from any place, time or device. Governments cannot afford to compromise security for flexibility. Beyond interception, consumer messaging services usage results in a failure to be compliant with official records acts requirements. In this session, learn ways to protect sensitive communications without interfering in critical operations: • Types of communication ‘hacks’ that defence is being exposed to worldwide • Best practice in risk mitigation: How NATO and other nations are successfully using a ‘Zero Trust’ approach to ensure secure communications • How apps are replacing the ‘burner phone’ – plus the repercussions of using personal devices in the battlefield • How Common Criteria and other certifications are used to evaluate secure communications • International collaboration: importance of intergovernmental and private-public sector collaboration to share intelligence
