ABSTRACT
It’s been almost 200 years since Carl Von Clausewitz coined the term “fog of war” to describe the uncertainties around an adversary’s capability and intent during conflict. In the 21st century, the addition of grey zone conflict in the cyber domain, has exponentially multiplied that uncertainty and made it fundamentally more complex. Today, state aligned actors are operating as mercenary units, targeting critical networks and sovereign data assets. They are doing this with seeming impunity and often without detection. Recent attacks on Australia’s critical infrastructure sector raise questions about our national cyber defence capability. With the proliferation of public cloud use by government agencies and critical industries, the location of sensitive data is itself uncertain. Referencing the cyberattacks Macquarie Government see while protecting 42% of Australian Government, Aidan will provide insights on the specific threats agencies face today. The fog of war is now a public cloud. Is the solution a military cyber-industrial complex?
