Session 3.6c Update: Making the Quantum Leap - Are You Ready?

Tracks
Thursday, November 16, 2023
1:30 PM - 2:30 PM
Menzies Theatre

Quantum technology seems to be everywhere at the moment, with the Government releasing a national quantum strategy, billions of funding being poured into the sector, and breathless talk of “quantum supremacy” and an upcoming “quantum apocalypse”.
In this update, we will move past the hype and jargon, and help the defence ICT professional to understand what quantum technology is, and the risks and opportunities it provides to the profession. In particular we will discuss:
  • The various different quantum technologies; there is a lot of focus on quantum computing, but what about quantum sensing, quantum navigation, quantum communication and others?
  • The current state of the art of the technologies, in particular what is real and what is on the horizo. This will also include a brief overview of the capabilities that Australia has in academia and industry.
  • The risks and opportunities that various technologies provide in the defence context – not just implications for how we encrypt and secure data, but also opportunities for collection of data and the processing of that data
  • So what? What should Defence be doing now, and what are the potential future roadmaps to mitigate the risks and exploit the opportunities?
