Defence, in particular the land domain, has multiple challenges in providing effective, reliable and secure C2, including:
  • Providing high-availability communications in remote environments;
  • Enabling secure, interoperable communications for the Integrated Force, WoG and multinational forces;
  • Transcending reliance on traditional LMR communications standards;
  • Improving redundancy to existing communication;
  • Concealing identifiable elements; and
  • Supplying reliable, high capacity data, in all environments.
To solve these challenges, Motorola Defence Australia (a division of Motorola Solutions) proposes an end-to-end solution featuring a tactical LTE paired with a range of communications equipment, and a variety of devices. The solution can enable data led decisions, while enhancing communications scalability and redundancy – putting the ADF at the forefront of multi-domain operations.
This critical and secure zero trust network layer, integrated with the existing C2 network, will provide additional redundancy to existing communications systems, and enable connectivity for multiple devices and emerging capabilities. It is end user device agnostic, based on a distributed architecture, making it scalable and more resilient to attack.
The proposed solution has the potential to significantly improve the survivability and effectiveness of the ADF’s communications networks, along with supporting the increasing number of sensors, deciders and effectors being deployed. Our combination of commercial and military off-the-shelf software, with a technology readiness level (TRL) of 7-9, can integrate with the EDHFCS, Link 22, along with the existing TCN and BTN.
So what are the issues and implications for the ADF in adopting this proven technology?
