Understanding the pivotal role of commercial satellites in a geopolitically contested Pacific is vital. They serve as vital communication channels, bridging gaps and enabling swift aid delivery during disasters. In an ever-evolving landscape, Australia must recognise the critical importance of unwavering commitment to engaging with Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the Pacific Islands amidst dynamic geopolitical dynamics. Diligently nurturing relationships with neighbouring nations is imperative to safeguard Australia's national interests. Allowing communication gaps to surface may create vulnerabilities exploited by other actors with differing interests, undermining Australia's strategic standing in the Pacific. Emphasising continuous cooperation, robust economic partnerships, and diplomatic ties is paramount in preserving Australia's position of influence.
This presentation will look further into the current state of connectivity in PNG and the pacific Islands, Australia’s contributions so far and the need moving forward and how Australia can work with our neighbours while recognising the mutual benefits and shared responsibilities. Australia must invest in strong diplomatic ties and sustainable economic partnerships to ensure a resilient regional community. Focusing firmly on PNG and the Pacific Islands will safeguard Australia's interests and reinforce commitment to regional cooperation.
