In this tutorial, Nick Peach, Chief Technology Officer of 2iC Ltd, will introduce the Lean Services Architecture (LSA), an open standard for digital interoperability between diverse systems and devices which are typically unattended, uncrewed, wearable or vehicle-borne.
The LSA was invented by 2iC then tested and openly published by the UK Ministry of Defence to achieve modular, open, and secure digital interoperability. LSA focuses on minimalism and efficiency, making it ideal for use at the network edge.
The core principles of LSA—modularity, interoperability, and security—will be thoroughly explored. Modularity ensures that systems can be easily adapted or upgraded without requiring complete overhauls. Interoperability enables different systems to communicate and work together seamlessly, critical for military operations needing rapid integration of various technologies. Security is paramount, ensuring that these integrated systems are protected against threats and unauthorised access.
The tutorial will show; how the complexity required to achieve interoperability across existing tactical bearers are hidden from the developer, how it is simple and quick to make a legacy system Lean Services interoperable, and how to make newly introduced services instantly discoverable & usable by other systems across the entire battlespace, all using familiar software skills and in the minimum of development time.
The tutorial will cover real-world case studies and practical examples such as, the sharing of airborne video data and establishing battlespace interoperability for autonomous vehicles, demonstrating how LSA can facilitate efficient and secure control and information exchange.
This tutorial is valuable for those involved in systems integration and digital transformation in Defence, offering practical solutions to common interoperability challenges. Biography
Nick Peach is the CTO of 2iC Limited, with over 30 years of experience in the IT industry. He is an experienced architect and solution designer, specialising in secure services-based interoperability within the operational and tactical military environments. He has consulted on both UK & Australian Generic Vehicle Architecture (GVA) & Generic Soldier Architecture (GSA) programmes; designed the architecture for the UK Single Information Environment and designed the solution for various soldier, RAS and communications interoperability projects throughout the 5EYES.
