Details

Mission Engineering (ME) represents a transformative approach in the Defence sector, leveraging Digital Engineering (DE) to optimise mission outcomes through a combination of digital mission modelling, digital systems modelling, and operational analysis. This methodology marks a paradigm shift to enhance capability realisation, force integration, and decision-making in complex multi-domain environments. By treating the mission as the system to be optimised, ME enables data-driven evaluations of systems and systems-of-systems against key mission metrics throughout their lifecycle. The Maritime Mission Engineering Pilot Programme (MMEPP) has spearheaded the adoption of ME within the Royal Australian Navy’s Navy Intelligence and Information Warfare Branch. Utilising the Kompozition Platform, the MMEPP applied ME methodologies to an in-flight Navy project, demonstrating how ME and DE can be used to support evidence-based decision-making and highlighting the limitations of a traditional function-based approach. The pilot programme’s success has led to the broader implementation of DE practices across the Navy Intelligence and Information Warfare Branch, aligning with the recently released Defence Digital Engineering Strategy. In this update, members of MMEPP will share insights on how ME and DE can de-risk and accelerate capability realisation to support the strategic goals of the National Defence Strategy. They will explore the benefits of adopting ME and DE and how these transformational approaches can help Defence maintain a competitive edge in an increasingly complex and rapidly evolving technological landscape.
