In October 2023, the US DoD Chief Digital and AI Office invited industry to provide information on their data mesh capabilities. The Request for Information stated; CDAO considers a data mesh, implemented with zero trust, with compliments of open source, non-proprietary & proprietary software components, as potential implementation of the Combined Joint All Domain Command and Control (CJADC2) DIL target architecture.
Public sector organizations have vast reserves of data, and the key to using it for mission value (whether that’s for warfighter advantage or citizen services or IT operations) is having the ability to find the right data in real time. In order for public sector organizations to become data-centric, all relevant IT and mission data must be securely collected, delivered, and accessed at enterprise scale and speed..
Data mesh is an approach where data is managed in a distributed model, rather than a centralized model. An effective data mesh layer for the public sector should provide the ability to collect and fuse a growing amount of data sets with minimal latency. For defense and national security agencies in particular, a data mesh should also be able to work on the tactical edge, no matter the scope and speed of operations or how austere the environment.
With a secure and flexible data mesh, data becomes a force multiplier, making intelligence actionable for teams working to elevate citizen experiences, boost operational resilience, and strengthen cyber defenses across complex environments.
