Details

Traditional space capabilities are brought into existence with very detailed and extended processes that start many years before launch, and with lives typically extending to 15 years. These extended timelines were largely driven by extreme cost, which led to low production rates and extreme risk aversion. More recently, new paradigms and capabilities have emerged that have dropped the cost of space capabilities, causing a rebalancing of trades in areas such as mission duration, risk tolerance and use of contemporary rather than legacy designs. This 'New Space' paradigm is perhaps best observed in the Starlink constellation that now makes up more than half of all active satellites on orbit. For National Security applications the New Space approach offers solutions to many of the well known fragilities of traditional National Security Space solutions. This presentation will cover newly applicable paradigms such as launch from inventory, reconfiguration at final qualification, accelerated launch schedules, rapidly reuseable launch vehicles and rapid large-scale satellite production. These approaches should drive a seismic shift in the thinking behind National Security space capabilities, as the art of the practical has moved rapidly in recent years.
