Details

If and when quantum computers emerge, they have the potential to disrupt many of the assumptions underpinning the security and encryption of our data. But what exactly should we be concerned about? What actions should we take, and when? While some advocate for immediate action, others argue that quantum computers are still so far off that there are more pressing priorities. In this talk, we aim to demystify this complex topic. Our goal is to help the audience identify common myths and misconceptions, and to equip them with the tools needed to make pragmatic assessments of the risks they face and the actions required. We will begin by providing an update on the latest understanding of the risks involved in securing data and networks against quantum threats. Several potential solutions have been proposed to address these risks, including quantum random number generators, quantum key distribution, and quantum-resistant cryptography. We will explore the latest developments in each of these areas, offering insights into what each technology can and cannot achieve, as well as their maturity and market readiness. The last 18 months have seen rapid advances in technology and the development of standards, alongside numerous organizations embarking on operational deployments. By reviewing real-life experiences of implementing potential solutions to mitigate quantum risks, we will highlight key lessons learnt for those developing, using, and sustaining military communication and information systems.
