Presentation Outline
Defence is on a journey to becoming a data-led organisation at scale. The Defence Data Strategy presents a vision for being data-centric, using data to enhance preparedness, optimise service delivery and realise decision advantage. The next phase of this strategy will require an approach to the currency of, and timely access to, streaming data.
Increasingly, military effect at the edge, and operational efficiency of corporate functions, will be based on data at the speed of relevance and a mature architecture for data in motion.
Autonomous and semi-autonomous systems generate and consume data continuously, and in complex operational environments actionable intelligence is dependent on the time needed to access the data, not the volume collected. Data-driven AI agents and decision-support systems need information feeds that are current, not hours old. Event-driven architectures are displacing point-to-point integrations, reducing the number of bespoke interfaces needed for each consuming system and lowering integration costs and time to value.
This session examines an edge-to-core data streaming architecture for Defence using the market’s leading streaming platform, Confluent.
It covers movement of trusted data between the operational edge, sensors and platforms into the intelligence, cyber and data-lakehouse environments that consume it. It addresses stream processing under degraded and contested conditions; the governance applied to data in transit, rather than only at rest; and application of the architecture to C4 and C4ISR use cases. It closes with an adoption path built on reusable patterns, capability uplift and skills transfer into Defence and Australian industry.
