Presentation Outline

High-frequency (HF) radio data communications technology is now more relevant than ever, continually advancing with fourth-generation systems currently being deployed. Advances in digital signal processor technology, together with the need to address shortcomings of legacy architectures, demand a rethink of future-looking HF systems at all levels of the communication layer model. This tutorial will present benefits to the defence industry through extensions to current HF communications systems architectures. The utilisation of both legacy bulk serial cryptography and modern IP-based encryptors is presented, while exploring modern NATO architectures and the latest editions of interoperability standards. Architecture for using STANAG 5066 both as a red-side and black-side ARQ protocol is also considered. Importantly, IP data over HF is recognised as a crucial future requirement. Architecture to achieve this is presented for STANAG 4691 (MARLIN) and new packet-based wideband (WB-RDL) waveforms.
