The 2022 AGLS Conference 2022 will be held as a hybrid event on Thursday, 20 October 2022, offering attendance either in-person at the Hotel Realm, Canberra, or virtually through the OnAir platform.
The conference theme is ‘Diversity in the law: Our practice and our people’. The conference will include sessions and discussions covering a range of the diverse areas of law and practice in which Australian Government lawyers work. These sessions and discussions will also consider inclusivity in the work of Australian Government lawyers.
Conference Program (2022 AGLS Conference Program)
- The Master of Ceremonies is Jamila Rizvi, best-selling author, Deputy Managing Director of Future Women, where she supports organisations and their employees towards gender equality at work, and a 2020 Women and Leadership Australia award winner.
- The Keynote Speaker is Meredith Leigh, First Parliamentary Counsel, Office of Parliamentary Counsel.
- Other government lawyer speakers are Dr Ben Gauntlett, Disability Discrimination Commissioner from the Australian Human Rights Commission, and Katie Miller, General Counsel, AUSTRAC who will present on Artificial Intelligence and the Law.
- A panel session including David Fredericks PSM, Secretary, Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water; Lisa Keeling, General Counsel, Australian Digital Health Agency and AGLS Board Chair; Timothy Goodwin, Barrister; Sue Mahony, Senior Policy Officer, Australian Pro Bono Centre (on secondment from the Attorney-General’s Department).
- The Black Dog Institute will present on ‘Mental health is everybody’s business’.
- Katherine Jones PSM, Secretary, Attorney-General’s Department and head of the AGLS will provide the closing address.
Event Details
- The AGLS Conference will be held on Thursday, 20 October 2022, from 9:00am to 5:00pm, followed by a networking event from 5:00pm to 7:00pm for those attending in-person.
- The event will be delivered in a hybrid format with in-person and virtual attendance options available:

- In person attendees will attend the conference at Hotel Realm, Canberra
- Virtual attendees will access the conference via the OnAir platform by EventsAir, and accessible via an IP address (similar to any web site people would access). It does not require any downloads or installation of apps to a PC. There will be an opportunity to test accessibility of the platform and a link will be sent to attendees prior to the event. The Conference Manager will work with attendees to resolve any issues that arise.
- The sessions will be recorded and accessible to all attendees (in-person and online) for three weeks following the Conference.
- Legal practitioners can gain Continuing Professional Development points by attending.
- The program includes opportunities to connect, chat and meet with other attendees, and for attendees to ask questions of speakers during interactive Q&As in a number of the sessions.
