PGCS Research Proposal for CASG / Defence / Government

NEWS FLASH

PGCS CASG RESEARCH GRANT AWARDED TO COMBINED WSU AND ICCPM RESEARCH TEAM

The PGCS Directors are pleased to announce that the multi-year PGCS CASG 2024/25 Research Grant has been awarded to a combined research team from Western Sydney University (WSU) and the International Centre for Complex Project Management (ICCPM).  The team will be led by Dr Xiaohua (Sean) Jin who is an Associate Professor in Project Management at WSU and the director of Project Management Programs.

The grant provides funding for two years and is a product of PGCS’s continuing commitment to improving project management, governance and controls in Australasia.

The winning proposal:

“Need for Speed – Shifting culture in project management and controls practices in the Australian Defence sector to achieve Speed to Capability Outcomes”

was selected as best aligned to the research question: "What needs to be different for project management and controls practices going forward to address increasing complexity and the current demands for accelerated delivery and delivery of minimum viable capability?"

The PGCS Directors were impressed by the high standard of proposals received, making the selection process more challenging than expected. PGCS Chairman Kym Henderson noted that the research is expected to provide valuable insights into the future of project management, governance, and controls as they adapt to current delivery challenges—particularly those associated with complex, high-technology, long-lead-time projects typical of Defence and other advanced industrial sectors.

Recognizing the significance of this research Mr. Chris Deeble, AO CSC Deputy Secretary CASG has agreed to make himself and his direct reports available to the successful researchers to facilitate successful outcomes from the research conducted.

PGCS Research Proposal for CASG / Defence / Government

The PGCS is pleased to announce that in consultation with the Deputy Secretary CASG, Mr Chris Deeble AO, CSC a specific research topic has been developed for 2024 which is designed to address the overarching question of:

“What needs to be different for project management and controls practices going forward” to address the contemporary major project and program delivery challenges being faced by Defence, other Government departments and Industry.

Due to the particular importance attached to this research proposal, the PGCS has waived our usual eligibility criteria (which limited research proposals from academics and researchers based within Australasia) with research proposals invited from academics, researchers and/or practitioners globally.

The PGCS Walt Lipke Research Grant for the PGCS research proposal for CASG has been set at $AUD 25,000 (GST inclusive where applicable).
